Pick up the phone.

You can send as many emails as you like and then play the waiting game, or you can pick up the phone. For some people picking up the phone can be daunting, but’s what the worst thing that could happen? Your call goes unanswered, the other person is unable to help or even unwilling to help you. All valid possibilities, but if you play the waiting game, you might be waiting for a long time.

Remember don’t expect others to appreciate your sense of urgency. You really can make things happen when you’re willing to put yourself out there and all of this is invaluable learning whichever way it goes.

There’s always etiquette to follow when using the phone and this varies depending on whether you know the person or not. It is a lot easier to call someone you know than if you don’t especially with social media and email communication. If calling someone you don’t know, use common sense because they don’t have a vested interest in your quest. It might be a good idea to think it through before picking up the phone.

Why would someone be willing to speak with you? What’s in it for them? This is where you think about the “hook”, which is: what’s the golden nugget of information to get them interested in your question.

You’ll have a small window of opportunity, so make it work for you.
